Cigler Václav
(1929)

The sculptor, architect and teacher Václav Cigler, born in Vsetín, is one of our most important living glassmakers. He graduated from the Higher Vocational School of Glassmaking and the Nový Bor Secondary School, then studied in Josef Kaplický's studio at the Academy of Arts and Crafts in Prague. At the instigation of his friends Stanislav Libensky and Jindřich Chalupecký, he headed the Glass in Architecture studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava from 1965 to 1979. Since the end of the 1950s he has been experimenting with optical glass, commonly used for the production of lenses and astronomical telescopes. This brings him new artistic possibilities. His works have been successful in solo exhibitions in Prague, Rotterdam, The Hague, Vienna, New York, Frankfurt am Main and other cities.
